BVMed Autumn Survey: Medtech Industry Growth by 4.4 Percent

The sales growth rate of medical technology companies in Germany has weakened compared to last year, dropping from 5.3 to 4.4 percent. Because of sustained downward pressure on prices, increased raw material prices and higher receivables, the profit situation has deteriorated. Nonetheless, the medtech industry has continued to create additional jobs in 2012. This is the summary of the Autumn Survey 2012 of the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed) for the world‘s largest medicine trade fair MEDICA in Düsseldorf, in which 101 member companies participated. Stagnation was particularly felt on the German market. On the other hand, export to foreign markets and especially to Asia developed very well, says BVMed Managing Director and Member of the Board Joachim M. Schmitt.

The overall economic conditions in Germany are still judged favorably by most medtech companies. But low reimbursement rates and health insurance funds’ policies which are hostile to innovation are the target of increasing criticism. Despite this difficult economic environment, the medical technology industry in Germany remains a job motor. Nearly 60 percent of the companies have created new jobs. The total business volume of the medtech manufacturing sector in Germany was 21.4 billion euros in 2011, according to official business statistics data. This industry employs over 175,000 people in Germany.

According to the BVMed Autumn Survey, about 70 percent of medtech companies surveyed this year expect sales results to be better than in 2011. Last year, this number was nearly 80 percent. Twelve percent expect a decrease in turnover. The recovery from the economic and financial crisis of 2010 has thus slowed down significantly. The consequences of the euro crisis, to be seen in rising receivables, leaves a significant mark on the German medtech market. This tendency is also reflected in the industry‘s outlook for 2013. Only 37 percent of the companies expect improved business performance next year. This value was still at 46 percent last year. 20 percent of the companies expected dwindling sales figures. This is a significant sign that the engine is also beginning to falter in the medtech industry, which otherwise tends to be rather independent of the general economy. Questioned on the specific effect of the economic and financial crisis, the companies surveyed in particular cite the stronger downward pressure on prices (81 percent), increased raw material prices (46 percent), and higher receivables (29 percent).

The upshot: There is rising scepticism among medtech companies towards the overall economic environment in Germany. Medtech companies therefore require a quick stabilization of general conditions for introducing innovations and assessing benefits of medical devices in Germany.
