German wound care policies mean savings not optimised

21.03.2007 -

Berlin/Germany. German chronic wound care patients do not have adequate access to modern products, although some 90% of doctors would like better provision, according to a survey by the Kiel-based institute for health systems research (IGSF).

In a study commission by BVMed, 853 doctors (4.3% of the national total) gave their views, with almost half saying that the products are not featured strongly enough in the EBM doctors' catalogue.

They also considered that politics and the sickness funds' hesitancy to reimburse for the products were restraining use. 40% of participants said they use modern wound care products, but only 16% said that the quality of care they could deliver was good or very good; a quarter said it was unsatisfactory.

Fully 70% of respondents said that overall costs to the system could be reduced with the provision of better, modern chronic wound care, leaving health minister Ulla Schmidt and the sickness funds to draw the obvious conclusion.
