BVMed at the turn of the year: Modern healthcare system with fast access to new medical technologies as challenge of the future

17.12.2001 - 01/02

Berlin. The establishment of a modern healthcare system which creates incentives for an optimal patient care, which permits the use of innovative and efficient medical technologies without delay and guarantees the best possible use of information technologies for patients, users as well as all other healthcare partners, was stated as the most important challenge of the years to come by the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed).

According to BVMed Director General, Joachim M. Schmitt, one of the most important challenges in health policy in Germany is the creation of a climate which is open to innovation in order to guarantee an optimized patient care by means of new treatment methods and innovative medical technologies. The establishment of such an innovation-oriented climate in German healthcare requires among others:

::   The policy of sectoral budgets in conjunction with the stability of contribution rates must be replaced by a financial system based on the actual medical requirements of the population under inclusion of optional financing models.

::   The new system of "Diagnosis Related Groups" (DRGs) in hospitals must allow for quick and flexible access to new treatment methods and medical technologies.
The Health Technology Assessment of the Federal Committees must become more transparent and speedy and should also include the manufacturers in an appropriate way.

Joachim M. Schmitt: "An innovation-oriented healthcare system is important, as innovative medical technologies increase the effectiveness and efficiency of patient care and thereby contribute to a long-term safeguarding of the healthcare system."
